I think I can finally confidently say that spring has arrived on the East Coast of the U.S.
The days are longer. The air is warmer. There are no more frost warnings on my weather app.
For me, spring always brings a subtle sense of urgency. A quiet pressure to make something happen. To grow. To achieve.
Like the tulip bulbs I planted last winter, now bursting into vibrant red, pink, and yellow in my front yard, I feel the urge to emerge from my cozy winter rhythm, abandon quiet evenings making soup and reading by the fire with a warm cup of tea, to make moves.
But this year, I’m approaching the season a bit differently.
After experiencing burnout more than once in my life, I’ve learned the hard way that constant activity, in Spring or any season, without a regular dose of downtime, quickly turns into exhaustion.
While it’s the opposite of how we have been socialized in our hyper-achieving culture, studies show that taking a pause, even briefly, shifts your body into a state designed for healing, clarity, and emotional balance.
In a season that celebrates growth, it can be easy to overlook the role that quiet and stillness play in making that growth possible.
Nature reminds us of that.
Before anything blooms, there is a period of quiet. Roots deepen. Energy gathers.
The same is true for us.
I have noticed that even taking as little as five minutes for a bit of stillness, and my thinking is clearer and my emotions are steadier. When I slow my pace, to take a few deep breaths, to write a few lines in a journal, to sip on a hot cup of coffee or tea, or to just stare a clump of beautiful trees or flowers, my mind finds space to focus, to discern. I step back into my day with a deeper sense of calm and spaciousness. The “to do” list is just as long, but it feels easier to approach and less overwhelming.
